The Zambian people really know the Art of Connecting. And I do not mean connecting by cellphone like our ads go, no I mean the real stuff. Example one: I walked along the highway this morning (both me and the highway in splendid condition, the road being tarred and with lots of space for bikers and walkers). But after 8 in the morning its quite hot along the road and so every tree giving shadow is a good resting place. Imaging the background: savannah. Until you reach the tree, one gets greetings from almost everyone passing, followed with a friendly smile as well. And very often with a friendly laugh, as my language knowledge of Bemba or Lamba is not so speedingly increasing. But anyway, coming into the shadow I hardly reached it before a woman shouts: "Come here, dont stay there alone, sit with us". So we gathered and had groundnuts together. One of the women had graduated Grade 12, which is not so very common, and had three baskets along the road, she was selling muffins and also delicious icecream, frozen and flavoured water in small plasticbags, very temptating. She told she always boils the water first to kill germs so I bought one to refresh.
And if you want transport in one of the shuttlebuses, you never have to wait for a long time to get one. They will slow down passing you and ask you where you are heading. On the other hand, the bus will go back and forth for a while until its full. Thats so smart, going as many passengers as possible in a vehicle, sharing the fuel and saving the planet.
Example TWO for the Zambian Skill of Connecting people: if you go to an Official Place like I did this very morning, you present your errand and wish and then I got connected with people who might be interesting for me to meet and vice versa. It goes in a smooth and polite way, so far I am deeply thankful.
